Question by John D: What are some good web directories to submit my website to? I am a family lawyer and want to get some traffic?
I am just starting out so a free legal directory would be great. I practice family law in Ellicott City MD if that helps. I would like to cover all my areas of law including divorce, separation, child custody, mediation. A free legal directory to submit to would be great.

There are a couple of places you can submit to I believe.
Try submitting your website to http://www.targetlaw.com
It is a free legal search engine which is pretty much the same thing as a legal directory. You may be able to submit to your local and state bar association as well.
Most legal directories such as Nolo, Findlaw, and Lawyers.com usually charge a monthly fee for a 1 year commitment. If it is less than $ 40/month, it might not be a bad deal. Also, I would see if you can do some link swapping with some other lawyers that your refer business to in Ellicott City such as bankruptcy, criminal, estate planning, real estate, etc.
I think you can also list on washlaw.com for free and some of the yellow pages provide legal directories.

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it’s easier said than done.

You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement – if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

IMISIDRO has given you a ton of great sites to submit your site into. You need to definitely need to submit in google DMOZ, Washlaw and certainly targetlaw. Someone mentioned targetlaw and I have a ton of my clients that have been getting hits from this site so make sure you submit there if they already don’t have your site.

You should also consider verizon superpages, lawyers.com findlaw.com and anything related to law. Try not submitting in non law related sites.

Articles are good but the content is becoming less valuable considering most of these services are using the same content. Best thing to do is just to create content for your own website or a service that doesn’t allow other sites to dupe their content.

Do you have a customer who can recommend your business? If so get listed for free on this newly launched site called http://www.servicedomino.com. Its a site for small businesses to promote themselves. The top listed services are often promoted, online, in their local areas by the website free(as part of their own marketing campaign).

With the different categories there…you benefit from the already available traffic.
Also as the database grows…you get traffic directed to your listing and category….as customers look for recommended businesses. Recommendations are the best form of ads arent they?
The basic listing is free as long as you are recommended by a customer. You get a subdomain free

e.g: http://josed.servicedomino.com

Let your customers drive your PR engine. If you saw a service on a third party website with recommendations from customers…you would prefer that to something you pull out of a classifieds wouldnt you? Also a customer who puts in a written recommendation is more likely to remember your services in the future too.
