Has anyone on here actually benefitted from advertising their business for free?

I imagine people have. Like on the side of your car or signs outside of your business. You have to spend money to make money you know.

the most effective free advertising is through word of mouth. if ppl really like your business, they will tell their friends about it. but it also doesn’t hurt to create some signs and post them around town or on your car.

I use all kinds of free advertising methods and yes they work although I believe you need to use both free and paid methods.

I directed the marketing for various companies for 20 years, and I can definitely say there are forms of free advertising that work. You didn’t specifically say what kind of free advertising you are considering. The most effective that immediately comes to mind for me is public and community relations. I have seen great benefits from a well-placed news release or having employees volunteer at a community event. Marketing and advertising is a process. You are working to build ongoing name recognition, so when someone is in the market for what you offer, they will think of you. It’s important to plan your advertising, so you have a constant presence. If you don’t have the resources to advertise every week, set yourself on a schedule to advertise one week or two weeks of each month. If this is more than your budget can handle, this is where you can get creative with the free advertising. Plan a simple family event. I just saw a local video store do a Hot Rods and Hot Dogs event for charity. I’m sure the local hot rod club provided the hot rods for people to look at at no charge. The store sent a news release (free publicity) for the event. Their only cost would have been the hot dogs, but they may have done a trade out for them. The store’s parking lot was filled with families, who no doubt came in to rent a movie.
At the beginning of the year, figure out just how much paid advertising (if any) you can afford. Decide how much presence you want and how much your budget can buy you. Then, fill in with the various forms of free advertising.
